This dual-channel wireless microphone system now comes with plenty of professional features inherited from the RØDE Wireless Pro, including 32-bit float on-board recording with up to 40 hours of recording time, an increased transmission range of 260m/850ft, locking 3.5mm microphone input on both transmitters, up to seven hours of battery life, Intelligent GainAssist technology, and much more. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

Three years after introducing the Wireless GO II, Australian audio specialist RØDE is back with its successor: the Wireless GO (Gen 3). However, in the meantime, the company launched the Wireless Micro and Wireless PRO variations of their compact wireless microphone systems. As more and more manufacturers enter the wireless audio market, RØDE had to step up their game by including many features of the PRO version in this third generation, but will it be enough?

RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) – features

The Wireless GO (Gen 3) is a compact and lightweight dual-channel wireless microphone system that measures only 46.5 x 44 x 20mm/1.83 x 1.69 x 0.78in – the dimensions are identical for both transmitters and the receiver – and ticks the scale at 35g/1.23oz for the transmitters, and 36g/1.27oz for the receiver.

Similarly to its predecessor, this third generation consists of two transmitters and one receiver. You can choose to capture two separate audio channels with the receiver or combine both channels into one stereo option for seamless recording on downstream cameras or recorders.

The RØDEWireless GO (Gen 3) is now available in 14 different colors

RØDE Wireless Go (Gen 3) – what’s new?

From the outside, the RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) doesn’t look vastly different than its predecessor. However, you’ll probably notice that the microphone input on both transmitters has been upgraded to a 3.5mm TRS locking connector, which is handy and way more professional when plugging in a Lavalier microphone.

Also, the receiver’s 3.5mm audio output can now be used as headphone output, which allows you to monitor your sound if your camera doesn’t have a headphone output. Furthermore, the screen at the top of the receiver is, according to RØDE, brighter and easier to read.

Top of the RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3)
Top of the RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3). Image credit: RØDE

Indeed, most of the changes and improvements are located inside the units. First of all, the transmitters’ omnidirectional built-in microphones have been upgraded with new capsules and preamps. These built-in microphones are the same as those in the Wireless PRO.

Next, while the Wireless GO (Gen 3) still uses the same 2.4GHz wireless transmission “Series IV” technology as the Wireless GO II, the transmission range has been increased from 200m/656ft to 260m/850ft. Also, it is compatible with all RØDE Series IV devices, including RØDECaster Pro II and RØDECaster Duo, RØDECaster Video, Wireless PRO, and Interview PRO.

The RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) features 32-bit float on-board recording
The Wireless GO (Gen 3) features 32-bit float on-board recording. Image credit: RØDE

The most considerable improvement is probably the addition of 32-bit float on-board recording directly within the transmitters, with a 40-hour capacity. Also, RØDE included the Intelligent GainAssist technology, which automatically adjusts the audio output gain so your camera’s audio doesn’t clip.

You can engage a safety channel at -12 dB for even more safety and peace of mind. This means that your left audio channel will be at your set audio level, while the right one will be 12dB lower, ensuring that your camera’s audio never clips.

You can connect the Wireless GO (Gen 3) to the RØDE Central app (mobile or desktop) for easy configuration and setup. Lastly, the transmitter and receivers all feature a USB Type-C port to charge them, offload on-board recordings, or use it as an audio interface, with a maximum battery life of 7 hours.

Pricing and availability

The RØDE Wireless GO (Gen 3) is available now for $299/€281.91, and it comes with a carrying pouch, a charging hub, furry windshields, and USB-C/Lightning/TRS cables. A separate Charge Case+ is available for $89/€89.61.

If we compare the Wireless GO (Gen 3) to the RØDE Wireless PRO, which retails for $362, I’m a bit confused with this new offering. The PRO model has the same features, though with the added benefit of Timecode capabilities, and it comes with a charging case and two Lavalier mics for less than the Wireless GO (Gen 3) with the Charge Case+.

Audiio Hans AI Introduced – Natural Language Music AI Search Tool for Creators https://www.cined.com/audiio-hans-ai-introduced-natural-language-music-ai-search-tool-for-creators/ https://www.cined.com/audiio-hans-ai-introduced-natural-language-music-ai-search-tool-for-creators/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2024 11:54:32 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=364905 Imagine typing a brief description of a scene from your project, and a list of royalty-free music appears that fits perfectly. Hans AI from Audiio does just that, giving creators a natural language search for music that works for a scene.

Audiio has an extensive library of royalty-free music and sound effects from a network of independent artists and publishers. They’re available in over 180 countries, and content creators of all types can take advantage of Audiio’s wide range of professional offerings. This year, they introduced Audiio Elements, which lets you edit individual components of any song on their platform, and LinkMatch AI helps find music quickly, while Originals offers original music from some of their top artists.

Hans AI from Audiio. Source: Audiio

How Hans AI works

Hans AI uses prompts from the creator to suggest a song that will fit a scene. Moreover, while Audiio can recommend music from their library based on a pasted link to a song, Hans AI does it based on a brief description of the scene or finding music similar to a score or popular song.

Searching for the right royalty-free music can take time – hunting around a website, sampling the music, and then adding it to your NLE timeline to see if it fits. Hans AI does it in seconds and can comprehensively list music that best fits your scene or project. Hans AI also showcases unique results that may elevate the scene further.

For example, you may have a scene involving the preparation and enjoyment of an intimate candlelit dinner or an action movie score. Simply type the description into the Hans AI search function, and a list of music options appears. From there, it’s easy to listen to the suggested song selections and give them a thumbs up or down. With an Audiio license, you can download the song and add it to your project.

You can also be more specific and ask Hans AI to find a song similar to a score from a movie or TV show or a song from an artist or band you admire.

Hans AI features intelligent and generative search. Source: Audiio

Taking Hans AI for a test drive

We tested Hans AI to see how it performs; it is fast and intuitive. The results for “intimate candlelit dinner” were very good to excellent. I also asked for music similar to the main score in Jurassic Park, and the songs were in the spirit or very close. And not just the primary score from the Dino classic but other pieces of music from John Williams’ brilliant score.

Test driving Hans AI from Audiio. Source: CineD

Finally, I typed in different artists and songs, and it presented music in the vein of those bands and singers. For example, searching for music similar to Radiohead presented songs in the spirit of the band. Songs similar to those from Taylor Swift had even better results, both with and without vocals.

Audiio has a wide range of genres, from pop to country, rock, and more. The songs are very professional and quite good. They will fit into any type of project, including narrative, corporate video, a commercial, wedding, etc. Nothing sounded like standard stock music.

Price and availability

There are several licensing options to utilize Audiio, including:

DJI Mic Mini Microphone Launched – Super Lightweight, 48-Hour Battery Life, and More https://www.cined.com/dji-mic-mini-microphone-launched-super-lightweight-48-hour-battery-life-and-more/ https://www.cined.com/dji-mic-mini-microphone-launched-super-lightweight-48-hour-battery-life-and-more/#comments Tue, 26 Nov 2024 13:00:13 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=364099 DJI has launched the Mic Mini, a super lightweight wireless microphone that weighs just 10 grams. It’s built to be versatile and has a long battery life, reliable transmission, and various wearing options. It works well with different recording setups and is compatible with cameras, smartphones, computers, and tablets, along with DJI’s ecosystem of devices (Osmo Action and Pocket series, for example). The Mic Mini should appeal to creators at all levels, so let’s have a look at the details.

DJI is well known for their drones, but their product line extends far beyond. We’ve covered several of their offerings many times, most recently the versatile DJI Air 3S Allrounder Drone (with our video review), the Goggle N3 (an alternative to the Goggles 3), and the OSMO Action 5 Pro (with a video review too). Today, we’re focusing on the new DJI Mic Mini, a microphone that weighs just 10 grams, less than half of the DJI Mic 2. Because it’s so lightweight, it can be worn on a collar or a thin shirt without causing any pulling. It can be clipped, attached with magnets, or worn on a lanyard.

Saramonic Ultra Introduced – 2-Channel Wireless Microphone System with Timecode and 32bit Recording Capabilities https://www.cined.com/saramonic-ultra-introduced-2-channel-wireless-microphone-system-with-timecode-and-32bit-recording-capabilities/ https://www.cined.com/saramonic-ultra-introduced-2-channel-wireless-microphone-system-with-timecode-and-32bit-recording-capabilities/#comments Thu, 07 Nov 2024 14:01:39 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=360670 The Saramonic Ultra 2-channel wireless microphone system has been unveiled. It’s an affordable wireless mic system and features timecode, 32-bit float REC, IPX5 waterproof, and a rugged, durable design. It is ideal for productions of any size – podcasters, Vloggers, YouTubers, and more. Let’s take a look!

We recently had a chat at IBC with Saramonic on their WiTalk 9, which you can read up on here, in case you missed it. Now, the company has announced the Saramonic Ultra – a completely new product, joining the Blink500 and BlinkMe series of wireless mics. The company has been providing professional audio gear for years, with everything from wireless microphones to wireless intercom systems. These are affordable systems that are built to last.

Saramonic Ultra 2-channel wireless microphone system in action. Source: Saramonic

    Saramonic Ultra – features

One of the biggest features of the Saramonic Ultra is the advanced timecode synchronization support, making it easy to sync timecode accurately with multiple cameras. This makes editing much easier, knowing the audio and video are in sync. It also works with different frame rates, from 23.98 fps to 30 fps. If you’re filming in 60p, you’ll set it up for 30 fps, for example.

Additionally, the wireless mic system features 32-bit float REC and ClearVoice technology, which helps with noise cancellation. There are Video Boost and Low-Cut modes, as well as automatic gain control, plus audio remains clear even in high-SPL environments (concert venues, airplanes flying overhead, etc.). Filming outdoors, where you often can’t always control the sound, won’t be an issue.

The Saramonic Ultra features a transmitter, receiver, charging case, external antenna, fur windshield, magnet clip, carrying bag, and several cables and adapters. Two Lavaliers can be bought separately, but the price is very reasonable.

Saramonic Ultra timecode in action. Source: Saramonic

The construction of the Saramonic Ultra is similar to their other products: durable and built to last. If filming is done outdoors, the IPX5 waterproof and weather-resistant feature will go a long way to help protect the wireless microphone system if bad weather persists.

    The full feature list includes:

    • Advanced timecode synchronization.
    • External antenna provides stable transmission up to 300m. The antenna can also be detached.
    • 32-bit float REC.
    • 48 kHz 24-bit and 48 kHz 32-bit.
    • Frequency response of 20 Hz – 20 Hz.
    • Premium MEMS Mic (built-in); two Lavaliers sold separately.
    • ClearVoice with intelligent noise cancellation, Voice Boost / Low-Cut modes, and automatic gain control.
    • 130 dB SPL with anti-distortion protection.
    • 25 ms of latency.
    • Supports 23.98 fps, 24 fps, 25 fps, 29.97 fps DF (drop frame), 29.97 fps, 30 fps. Select the closest match, i.e., 23.98 fps for 47.96 fps.
    • Rugged and durable design.
    • Cutting-edge IPX5 weather resistance
    • Circular ‘totem’ design, similar to the Blink500 series.
    • Detachable external antenna for enhanced signal range and stability (up to 300m)
    • Internal recording in the transmitters with 8GB of internal storage (auto-overwrites oldest audio).
    • 1.1″ Touchscreen and Knob.
    • 6 hours of battery life.
    • Comes in black or white.

The Saramonic Ultra is compatible with cameras, smartphones (via USB-C and Lightning), and some action cameras, including the DJI Action 4 and DJI OSMO Pocket 3.

Why 32-bit float and timecode are important for audio

32-bit float recording is an important feature of the Saramonic Ultra, giving more options and flexibility with audio recording. In scenarios involving run-and-gun filming, for example, there are times when audio levels can fluctuate and end up with a sound that is clipping and distorted. In the case of recording at lower bit rates, such as 16-bit or 24-bit, that audio will be difficult to work on and clean up.

With 32-bit float, a higher number of audio values can be recorded than 16-bit and 24-bit, giving more ‘latitude’ to the sound being recorded, much like shooting in RAW. 16-bit records with a dynamic range of up to 96.3 dB, 24-bit up to 144.5 dB, and 32-bit float up to an astounding 1,528 dB. That higher number allows for better recording of soft sounds (dialogue) or something very loud (a concert) without distortion or other problems. The audio is easier to work with in post, again, like shooting in RAW.

Additionally, the Saramonic Ultra’s ClearVoice technology will help with intelligent noise cancellation, plus its Voice Boost and Low-Cut modes will ensure audio is clean and not clipping.

With the Saramonic Ultra’s timecode synchronization capabilities, multiple cameras and multiple microphone and recorder shoots won’t be a chore to sync up the audio in post (even with multi-cam functionality). Regardless of whether the mics, recorders, and cameras start and stop at different times, the timecode sync tags the start time accurately, down to the frame.

The Saramonic Ultra external antenna can be detached. Source: Saramonic

    Price and availability

The Saramonic Ultra is available now and retails for $269 for the receiver, and adding Lavalier microphones brings the price to only $299. This is an affordable price and takes on similar products like the RØDE Wireless Pro ($399), DJI Mic 2 ($399), and Hollyland Lark MAX ($249). While the features of competing mics are very similar, some have longer battery life and larger storage (the RØDE Wireless Pro).

The combination of advanced timecode synchronization, 32-bit float REC, and its rugged, weather-resistant design makes the Saramonic Ultra 2-channel wireless microphone system a nice option for productions, YouTubers, podcasters, those working in the news, and others. Plus, the price of $299 fits nearly every budget. Learn more at Saramonic’s website.

Sennheiser Profile 2.4GHz Two-Person Wireless Audio System Announced https://www.cined.com/sennheiser-profile-2-4ghz-two-person-wireless-audio-system-announced/ https://www.cined.com/sennheiser-profile-2-4ghz-two-person-wireless-audio-system-announced/#comments Thu, 31 Oct 2024 10:41:16 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=360313 Aimed at creators, the new Sennheiser Profile wireless audio kit communicates on the 2.4GHz frequency and offers a kit with two transmitters, a receiver, and a charging bar that also functions as a handheld microphone. Each transmitter offers 24-bit internal recording, a built-in mic, and a 3.5mm mic input. The receiver offers a safety channel, analog and digital outputs, and more.

The traditional German audio gear manufacturer Sennheiser is known among filmmakers mostly for their microphones, analog wireless sets, or digital dual-band wireless systems, such as the Sennheiser AVX. The company just launched a new affordable 2.4GHz-only wireless audio system called Sennheiser Profile. Let’s take a quick look at the details.

Sennheiser Profile wireless microphone kit. Source: Sennheiser

Sennheiser Profile – affordable 2.4GHz wireless audio

Sennheiser Profile is a new two-person wireless microphone system with a dual-channel receiver. It communicates via 2.4GHz frequency, so we can consider this a direct competitor to countless wireless audio kits from DJI, RØDE, and many more. Sennheiser claims the maximum range is 803.8ft / 245m (TX to RX, unobstructed line of sight) or up to 492.1ft / 150m (with obstruction).

As the 2.4GHz frequency tends to be overcrowded in many locations and, therefore, often exhibits signal interference, the transmitter units offer on-board recording for added safety. I honestly would not even consider buying a 2.4GHz wireless audio system without this feature, but thankfully, almost all such systems now include it.

The Sennheiser Profile transmitter unit includes a built-in microphone, but there is also a 3.5mm audio input connector for connecting an external microphone (lavalier or other compatible microphone). Thankfully, the 3.5mm port has a thread, so the mic can be secured (if supported by the mic).

Each transmitter unit features 16GB of internal memory for backup recording. This should be enough for up to 30 hours of 24-bit 48kHz audio recording. Unfortunately, there is no 32-bit Float recording option. Each TX unit weighs 1oz / 27g. The approximate runtime of the 280mAh built-in battery is 7 hours.

The signal-to-noise ratio of the included omnidirectional mic capsules is 78.5 dBA, according to Sennheiser. Maximum SPL is 113 dB SPL, and the frequency range is from 60 Hz to 20 kHz.

Safety Channel Mode outputs audio at a selected sound level in one channel and at a lower level in the other to prevent distortion and clipping in unstable audio environments.

    Sennheiser Profile receiver (RX)

The receiver unit (RX) has a 3.5mm analog and USB-C digital audio output so that it can be connected to various cameras or mobile devices. The kit comes with a male USB-C adapter, a Lightning adapter, and a 3.5mm TRS to TRS cable, so you do not have to purchase anything separately.

The RX also offers a 3.5mm headphone output for monitoring. The OLED touchscreen at the back can be used to monitor audio levels or change various settings. Sennheiser claims that the RX can run for up to 7 hours when fully charged. The RX size is very compact, with a weight of 30g / 1.06 oz.

It is worth noting that there is no timecode support, and Sennheiser claims the latency is less than 8ms.

    Charging bar

The wireless charging bar and handheld microphone transmitter offer added functionality. The bar charges the receiver and transmitters simultaneously for an additional 11 hours of runtime. Additionally, it can function as a handheld omnidirectional microphone/transmitter. The internal battery of the charging bar can be fully recharged via USB-C in under three hours.

    The bar weighs 7oz / 198g, and its dimensions are 6 x 2.2 x 1.6″ (152 x 55 x 41mm).

    Price and availability

The new Sennheiser Profile wireless microphone system is available now for pre-order. The whole kit, which has two transmitters, a receiver, and a charging bar, retails for $299 (around €310, including VAT in Europe). On top of the mentioned parts, the kit also includes a cold shoe mount for the RX, a clip magnet for TX, a pouch to carry the system in, and windscreens for both the TX and charging bar microphones. Additionally, you can buy the receiver or the clip-on wireless transmitter/recorder separately for $99.95 each. The charging bar retails for $59.95.

Both versions use external antennas to ensure a stable wireless connection, a crucial element for Accsoon, given their experience with wireless systems.

    Features

The system operates over distances of up to 400m (1,312 ft) without the need for a base station. The CoMo SE includes a host headset with orange buttons and up to four remote (or slave) headsets with black buttons. Each headset comes with a flip-to-mute microphone and an ergonomic design for comfort during extended use. The microphone also includes advanced Environmental Noise Cancellation (ENC) to minimize background noise.

SmallRig S 60 Wireless Microphone (USB-C Version) Introduced – Discreet and Button-sized https://www.cined.com/smallrig-s-60-wireless-microphone-usb-c-version-introduced-discreet-and-button-sized/ https://www.cined.com/smallrig-s-60-wireless-microphone-usb-c-version-introduced-discreet-and-button-sized/#comments Thu, 03 Oct 2024 10:26:08 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=357612 SmallRig has introduced the S 60, a wireless microphone aimed at creators for those moments when staying discreet is key. It’s compact, about the size of a button at 2.6 cm (1 inch), and weighs just 7.9g (0.28 oz). Featuring an LDS antenna, extended battery life, and more – pin it to your shirt or collar, and you’re ready to start recording. Let’s have a look!

SmallRig has made a name for themselves with their tools for filmmakers and content creators – everything from their 5W RGB LED lights to camera cages for the Nikon Z6III to an accessory ecosystem for the Sony BURANO. The S 60 wireless microphone (USB-C version) is the newest addition to their lineup. According to the company, it’s made for creators who need to preserve sound quality but where visible audio equipment might be distracting. You can have a look at how it works here:

    Features

The little S 60 uses a 1000 mAh battery cell for 11 hours of battery life (44 with the charging case). It features a DSP chip that supports 48 kHz/24-bit recording, and it includes a 3-level gain adjustment for better control over input levels. A button on the transmitter lets you mute with a double tap and enable noise reduction with one tap. The LDS antenna allows for a transmission range of up to 300m/984.2 ft, and the microphone operates with a latency of less than 20 ms for real-time audio capture without noticeable delay, according to SmallRig. The SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) is 74 dB, and the SPL (sound pressure level) is 120 dB. Finally, the S 60 has a USB-C interface that can simultaneously charge when attached to a mobile phone.

TASCAM FR-AV2 Audio Recorder Announced – 32-bit Float Field Recorder and More https://www.cined.com/tascam-fr-av2-audio-recorder-announced-32-bit-float-field-recorder-and-more/ https://www.cined.com/tascam-fr-av2-audio-recorder-announced-32-bit-float-field-recorder-and-more/#comments Tue, 01 Oct 2024 12:14:08 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=357405 The TASCAM FR-AV2 joins the fray of 32-bit float audio field recorders with quite a splash. Successfully checking all the standard boxes, the FR-AV2 adds some significant features like Timecode and Bluetooth monitoring. These, along with dual combo jacks, USB-C compatibility, color LCD screen, rugged build, and 32-bit float recording, make it an excellent companion for any hybrid camera. The compact size and boxy design should allow for easy rigging into your kit of choice.

32-bit recorders have somewhat revolutionized our industry in recent years. While 24-bit isn’t bad, the 32-bit float comes with such headroom that almost no recording mistake can’t be fixed in post. I guess sound professionals will find additional advantages, but from a single operator point of view, 32-bit revolutionized my workflow, allowing me to focus on other things with the peace of mind it provided. Tight teams, quick-response ENG professionals, wedding filmmakers, and documentarists can now count on the recorder without constant monitoring, even in extreme conditions.

    Robustly compact

The TASCAM FR-AV2 follows this slogan both in terms of design and in terms of features. Every inch of its surface area teems with functionality. On the device’s main panel, we’ll find a generous 2″ color LCD screen and four function buttons to navigate the displayed menu and options. There are four playback buttons (with additional functions) and a big REC button. Three LEDs will provide recording indication as well as clipping alert per channel. While not as relevant for 32-bit float recording, the device also supports 24-bit, so that’s a nice touch.

    Wired connectivity

Two XLR/TRS Combo Mic/Line Inputs tightly fill the left-hand side of the TASCAM FR-AV2. The TRS compatibility sets the FR-AV2 apart from two of its closest competitors, the Zoom F3 and Tascam’s own Portacapture X6, making it more flexible.

But the 3.5mm jacks on the bottom panel make the TASCAM FR-AV2 an amazing fit for hybrid filmmaking. To the left is the input jack, enabling audio from 3.5mm microphones, such as the popular RØDE VideoMic series. Pretty standard, but this input can double as a linear Timecode input, letting us use various Timecode generating options other than the optional Bluetooth add-on. Next, there’s a simple headphone jack with volume control, and to the right is the camera/LINE/TC out.

Tascam FR-AV2 output panel. Image credit: TASCAM

This is an extremely important feature. Every filmmaker and content creator working with external recorders is well aware of the hustle involved with syncing audio and video in post. The TASCAM FR-AV2 all but eliminates the need for sync in post, which will greatly appeal to video creators across the board.

    Tascam FR-AV2. Image credit: TASCAM

The right panel houses the rather oversized Micro SD slot (up to 512GB) behind a rubber cover. A USB-C port will double as a power supply and external interface for both desktops and mobile devices, and a sliding on-off switch is also here. Notice the lack of a “Lock” position. The bulge on the top panel is the optional AK-BT2, a new Bluetooth dongle with some meaningful tricks up its sleeve.

    Next level Bluetooth

As with many current audio recorders, an optional Bluetooth dongle is available. Most dongles allow for remote operation, REC start/stop, and TC Sync. The new AK-BT2 brings some additional features to the TASCAM FR-AV2. The most useful of these is probably the audio monitoring option. Yes, you can now hear your audio via common Bluetooth headphones or speakers. This can be done in conjunction with wired monitoring.

TASCAM FR-AV2 monitored by Bluetooth headphones. Image credit: TASCAM

Five recorders can be simultaneously controlled by a single phone or tablet via the mobile app. The system is also compatible with the Atomos UltraSync BLUE system, so if you’ve invested in these products – fear not.

    Price and availability

The TASCAM FR-AV2 is on the pricier side of the 32-bit float audio recorders crowd at $399. It tops the Zoom F3 by $100, which is quite fair considering its added features. It’s also priced higher than TASCAM’s flagship Portacapture X8 current pricing ($369.99), though less than the latter’s launch price. It’s currently available for pre-order. For more information visit the TASCAM website.

Will the new FR-AV2, which is directly aimed at filmmakers and hybrid shooters, cater to your needs? Will it help you start working with external recording? Let us know in the comments.
